The DRC has the largest hydropower potential in Africa and one of the largest worldwide, with a technically feasible potential of some 100,000 MW. Only about 2.5% of this potential has been developed so far.
Bunia Hydro Project
- Fully operational plant
- Southern Energy is both a developer and manager of the project including transmission and distribution
- Revenue collection via prepaid meter network
- Phase 1 underway and includes complete rehabilitation of the generation and distribution network to 5MW capacity
- Phase 2 will commence early 2022 and will increase capacity to 16MW
DRC Pipeline Hydro Projects
- Projects of interest include 5 existing and operational sites between 5MW and 20MW
- Feasibility studies underway
- Two projects to commence by Q4 2021
DRC Solar/Hybrid Projects
- Southern Energy carrying out a feasibility study on an existing 2.5 MW solar hybrid plant
- An additional 5MW solar site has been identified
- MOU with the local authorities signed. DD underway
